Exploring the mystical charm of Varanasi’s famous ghats

Varanasi, also known as Banaras, is famous for its lush, green scenery and culture. One of the most prominent features that draw tourists to this city is the Ghats – a series of steps that descend towards the banks of the sacred river Ganges.

Being an ancient city, Varanasi is home to thousands of temples, ashrams, and mystics – a place where spirituality and mysticism converge effortlessly. Here are some of the famous ghats that have been enchanting visitors since time immemorial.

The Dasaswamedh Ghat

Regarded as the most prominent ghat, the Dasaswamedh Ghat is the land of legends and myths. Legend has it that Lord Brahma sacrificed ten horses for the welfare of everyone on this ghat.

Alternatively, a lesser-known story says that Lord Rama created this ghat when he arrived in the city after killing Ravana in Lanka.

The Manikarnika Ghat

The Manikarnika Ghat’s charm lies in the fact that it is one of the oldest and busiest ghats in Varanasi. This is often regarded as a place of salvation as Hindus believe that the cremation of their loved ones on this ghat gives them Moksha (liberation from the cycle of birth and death).

Moreover, it is also famous for the Manikarnika well, said to be dug by Lord Vishnu himself.

The Assi Ghat

The Assi Ghat, also called the southernmost ghat in Varanasi, is famous for its chhath puja. According to legend, Lord Ram and his brother, Lakshman, stayed at this ghat during their exile. Local people believe that taking a dip in the waters of this ghat helps one wash away all their sins.

Moreover, the vibrant aarti (puja) that takes place every evening is a must-see sight.

The Harishchandra Ghat

The Harishchandra Ghat, a place where untouchables used to live, became famous when King Harishchandra established this ghat as a place where poorer families could cremate their dead.

The ghat is also renowned for charity – it is believed that the offering of rice balls, ghee (clarified butter), and coins to poor people at this ghat can lead one to go to heaven.
